Why Retenta exists

In May 2026, the ShinyHunters breach of Instructure exposed 3.65 TB of data across 8,809 institutions — and the Canvas recovery path that many compliance teams quietly relied on was permanently removed. Overnight, “we can get it back from the vendor” stopped being a plan.

Retenta is built by someone who spends their working life in backup and disaster recovery, for the people who own the audit when an LMS fails: RTO compliance managers, university and TAFE Canvas administrators, and directors of digital learning. The hard part of compliance was never taking a backup — it was proving the backup actually restores.

So that’s what Retenta does. We back up your Canvas courses to immutable storage in Australia, run a real restore drill on a schedule, and hand you a counter-signed Restore Verification Report mapped to the exact clause your auditor will ask about.

We’re early, and honest about it. We’re building Retenta alongside our first design partners — institutions that get free access while we prove the product together. If that’s you, come build it with us.
